Question 1 of 4

What does your drywall need?

That hole in the wall is not going to fix itself

A doorknob went through the bedroom wall. Again. A crack opened along the ceiling seam and keeps getting longer. The last patch job shows through the paint like a bad secret.

Small problems. But they stare at you every single day.

We fix damaged drywall across Richmond, VA. Holes, cracks, dents, nail pops, and bad patches from the last guy. We cut out what is broken, put in fresh board, tape the seams, and finish it smooth. Then we match your wall texture so the repair blends in and disappears.

Drywall repair is our trade. It is what we do all day, every day.

How it works

Every repair follows the same steps. Skip one and the patch shows. We never skip.

First, we cut the damage back to solid board. A ragged hole gets squared up. A cracked seam gets opened so we can see what moved. You cannot build a lasting patch on crumbly edges.

Next, we screw in fresh board. For holes, we cut a patch to fit and fasten it to the studs or to backing strips. The patch sits flush with the wall around it. No humps, no dips.

Then we tape the seams. Paper tape pressed into joint compound, tight and flat. Tape is what keeps the crack from opening back up next spring. Spackle alone will not do it.

Then we build up joint compound in thin coats. Each coat goes on wider than the last. Each coat dries fully before the next one goes on. Rushing the dry time is the number one reason patches fail.

Last, we sand it smooth and match your texture. Orange peel, knockdown, or smooth — the finish on the patch matches the wall around it. That match is what makes a repair vanish.

The damage we see most

Doorknob holes top the list. A door swings too far, the knob punches through. We see them in bedrooms and bathrooms most. Quick to fix, and we can add a door stop so it never happens again.

Seam cracks come next. Long thin cracks where two sheets of drywall meet. Houses settle. Seasons change. The seam moves a hair and the tape lets go. We re-tape the seam the right way so it stays shut.

Nail pops are the small round bumps that push through paint. The nail or screw behind the board works loose over time. We re-fasten the board tight to the stud, dimple the fastener, and refinish the spot. Filling over a loose nail without re-fastening just buys you a new pop next year.

Dents and dings come from daily life. Furniture corners, toys, ladder feet. Shallow dents often need just compound and sanding. Deep dents need a patch.

Bad DIY patches are their own category. Thick spackle smeared wide, sanded rough, painted over. We skim over them, re-tape where needed, match the texture, and make them disappear. No judgment. Patching looks easy on video.

Why patches fail

Most failed patches fail for the same three reasons. Too much compound in one coat. Not enough dry time between coats. No tape on the seam.

Joint compound shrinks as it dries. A thick coat shrinks hard and cracks. Thin coats shrink a little and stay put. That is why we build up in layers instead of filling the hole in one go.

Dry time matters more than people think. Mud that feels dry on top can still be damp underneath. Sand it too soon and it gums up. Paint it too soon and it bubbles. We wait the full dry time, every coat.

And tape is not optional on seams. Compound alone has no strength across a joint. The house moves, the seam flexes, and untaped compound cracks right down the middle. Paper tape embedded in mud gives the seam the backbone it needs.

Richmond walls have quirks

Richmond housing stock keeps things interesting. The Fan has brick rowhouses with plaster walls. The counties have 1960s ranches, 1990s two-stories, and new builds going up fast in Short Pump and Midlothian.

Older homes settle. Settling opens seam cracks and pops nails. We fix the crack and tell you straight whether it is just settling or something worth a second look.

Newer homes have their own pattern. Fast builds mean hurried tape jobs. We see seams showing through paint in houses less than five years old. The fix is the same: re-tape, re-finish, match texture.

Humidity plays a role too. Richmond summers are damp. Damp air slows dry time. We plan for it and never rush a coat.

What happens on the day

We show up on time. We walk the job with you and confirm the written price before we start. No surprises halfway through.

We move small items and valuables out of the way. Big furniture shifts to the middle of the room and gets covered in plastic. Floors get drop cloths.

We hang plastic to seal off the work area. Drywall dust is fine and it travels. The barrier keeps it out of the rest of your house.

Then we work. Cut, patch, tape, mud. We clean up at the end of each day. Most repairs need two visits: the patch visit, then a return after the mud dries for sanding, texture, and finish.

When we leave, the wall is smooth, sealed, and ready for paint. We put your furniture back where it was.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a drywall repair take?

Most small repairs take two short visits. Visit one is the patch and tape. Visit two comes after the mud dries, for sanding, texture, and finish. Bigger repairs take longer, but we tell you the timeline up front.

Will I be able to see the patch when you are done?

No — that is the whole job. We feather the compound wide, sand it smooth, and match your wall texture. When the paint goes on, the patch vanishes. If you can find it, we come back.

Can you fix a crack that keeps coming back?

Yes. A crack that returns was never really fixed — it was filled, not re-taped. We open the seam, re-tape it properly, and finish it so it stays shut through seasonal movement.

Do you fix nail pops?

Yes. We re-fasten the board tight to the stud first, then refinish the spot. Just filling over a loose nail is a temporary fix. The re-fasten is what makes it last.

What if the hole is really big?

Big holes just mean a bigger patch. We cut back to the studs, screw in fresh board, tape, mud, and finish like new. Even a missing section of wall comes back clean.

Do I need to paint after the repair?

We leave the wall smooth, sealed, and ready for paint. Most customers paint themselves. If you want us to paint the patch, ask when we quote.

Is drywall dust bad for my kids or pets?

Drywall dust is a nuisance, not a toxin. Still, we keep it contained: plastic barriers, dust control at the sander, and daily cleanup. Keep kids and pets out of the work area while we sand.

Can you repair drywall in a bathroom?

Yes. Bathrooms need moisture-resistant board, and we use it. If the damage came from a leak, fix the leak first — then we rebuild the wall right.

Do you guarantee the repair?

If a seam we taped opens back up or a patch we finished shows through, we come back and fix it. Straight as that.
